Addictions: understanding the cycle to break free

Alma Angélica Arreola M. · 21/09/2026

Let's remove a burden of guilt first: addiction is not a lack of willpower. It is a cycle that hijacks the brain's reward system, and like any cycle, it can be interrupted.

The cycle

  • Trigger: an emotion, a place, a time or a routine.
  • Urge: the growing need demanding an outlet.
  • Momentary relief: the behavior calms for a while.
  • Guilt and repetition: and the cycle starts again, sometimes stronger.

What helps

  • Identify the triggers and the emotions behind them.
  • Practical tools for the critical moment (breathe, step out, call).
  • Emotional support so you do not do it alone.
  • Support without judgment, the only way someone can be honest.

Reworking the relationship

The goal is not perfection or "never failing again". It is to regain your freedom step by step and build a life where the cycle loses power.

For the family

Supporting without controlling, listening without judging and setting loving limits is also part of the process.
